The beginning is only understandable after you carefully look into the mind, maturity, guilt, and fear that resides deep within Hanna. She is not a good person, but you can understand how alone and self-hating she is. Hanna does not believe that anybody could love her and she hides – everything – all the time. Michael is such a tragic character and he may never find the forgiveness or affection he desires. Fantastic novel and a unique film.
